Michael Botur's unique talent and idiosyncratic voice as a writer of cryptic, ground-breaking, contemporary short stories, as well as his local persona in Auckland as a well-known and applauded performance poet (not to mention his journalistic flair and his creative writing teaching abilities) have become increasingly apparent over the past few years, as he has become more widely published and acknowledged. I read his early stories as a fellow student in 2008, on the Master of Creative Writing course at AUT, and have continued to enjoy and support his work since. This young writer is one to watch; every generation of new writers produces many wannabes, but only a few who go on to succeed. MB is one of those creatives who is not only ahead of the pack but also so dedicated to his craft, so involved in capturing this time and this place and this argot and this angst, that one cannot but pay attention.Product details

Michael Botur's stories seem to spill out of the moment - hairy, and hair-raising, and not for lazy readers. But so rewarding. They're written without judgement or emotional bias - yet emotional connection quickly grows for the puzzled, curious characters a young boy taken on a robbing spree with his dad; a singer in a strip club who makes it big, then her YouTube stats shrink and she wants to crawl a into a cardboard box and disappear. There's nothing genteel about these stories. They take place in New Zealand's state houses, night clubs, prison cells and schools. Nothing's smooth or tidy. The author uses slang, swear words and grammar just as you'd hear them in the multi-cultural, tough environment he describes - where no-one wastes time on political correctness. Refreshing.
Great to finally see a collection of short stories from Michael Botur. Amazingly ironic literature with a bit of kiwi flair as always with twists and turns and swears that keep you reading.
Highly recommended.
